This presentation examines the language curricula of the International Baccalaureate (IB) and the NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC), with a particular focus on their Chinese language programmes. The importance of language learning is widely recognised in today's world. In developing a language curriculum, students' linguistic backgrounds, learning objectives, and approaches to learning and teaching are key considerations. IB provides considerable flexibility, allowing students to choose from a range of language courses and levels of study. In contrast, the NSW HSC languages (other than English) courses are governed by clearly defined eligibility criteria that determine which students may enrol in particular language courses. In terms of curriculum aims, the IB promotes a language learning continuum and encourages a maximum possible use of the target language in both teaching and assessment. By comparison, the NSW HSC appears to place greater emphasis on the linguistic diversity of its student population and recognises the role of English as the primary language of schooling. These differing approaches and practices reflect distinct educational philosophies as well as broader cultural and social contexts. Key issues may also include diversity, equality and inclusion in the school community, and the extent to which curriculum and classroom practices support meaningful student engagement in the learning process.
